2023 SUMMER COMMENCEMENT

Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul (PSPS) held a graduation ceremony for the PSPS Class of 2022 on 22 August 2023 at Sapphire Hall, Chunma Art Center. At PSPS, 40 students from 17 countries earned their master's degrees. Yeungnam University President Choi Oe-Chool and PSPS Dean Lee Byeong-Wan attended to congratulate students on their graduation. President Choi said in his congratulatory remarks, “The knowledge and capabilities honed at PSPS will lead regional development and innovation in your home country and become a driving force for contributing to human society. Today's graduation ceremony will be a new starting point for the unknown world.” Also, “I hope you will have the courage and wisdom to initiate the development of your region and country through the knowledge you have learned here. Furthermore, I hope you all become proud alumni who will lead the prosperity of the global community.” In his congratulatory speech, Dean Lee said students had unforgettable precious experiences at PSPS and he hoped them to put these memories closest to their heart. He also delivered three requests to students who will open a new chapter in their lives after graduation today. First of all, while our global society is facing many difficulties today, the values pursued by the PSPS, especially the "Can do spirit”, will guide the way. Secondly, he emphasized that we should be steadily connected through many great networks formed by the PSPS. Above all, he stressed that our society needs unity and coordination, and that we should be able to connect with alumni and professors through various platforms. Finally, he insisted that both Faculty and the admin staff are looking forward to seeing your achievements and glory in your future, and they hope to be actively delivered news of your accomplishment on various platforms. In addition, he put emphasis on that the PSPS now is your home, and you're always welcome back. Savene Kadijah, who gave the valedictory speech, expressed her gratitude to the PSPS faculty and staff and stated, “As we leave this chapter of our lives behind, let us remember the lessons we have learned, the friendships we have made, and the experiences we have shared. Let us take these with us as we embark on the next phase of our journey. Essentially, let us embrace the spirits of Saemaul Undong to impact our respective societies. Let us always remember that the weapon of knowledge we have acquired will thrive through diligence, cooperation, and self-help, together with sharing, creativity and service. I strongly believe that with these weapons of change entrusted to us, we are more determined than ever before to foster development in our communities and respective countries. Lastly, I will be failing in my duty if I don’t appreciate you all for the great honour and humble privilege bestowed on me to serve you as President of the 2022 batch Student Council. You were indeed great people to serve and work with!”

[PSPS Distinguished Lecture Series] Honorary doctorate degree conferment for Dr. Jim Yong Kim

PSPS students attended the honorary doctorate ceremony of former World Bank President Jim Yong Kim at Yeungnam University. After awarding an honorary doctorate, he gave a special lecture to the PSPS students and faculty members of YU under the theme of “Faith in Things Unseen”. In the special lecture, he calmly talked about his childhood, growth process, and 40 years of global health activities. He shared his experiences in a wide range of global health activities, including Haiti, Peruvian health projects, HIV eradication activities in Africa, and mental health problems in modern society, and gained great sympathy. Through this special lecture, PSPS students sympathized with and were impressed by his personal history of contributing to human society and had a will to become a person who can play a big role in the international community in the future.

[PSPS Distinguished Lecture Series] Working towards Zero Hunger in Guinea through the application of Saemaul Undong

On July 24, 2023, Hyoung-Joon Lim, Head of the WFP Guinea office, gave a special lecture to PSPS students at Cheonma Art Center at Yeungnam University. He lectured on the topic of “Working towards Zero Hunger in Guinea through the application of Saemaul Undong”. PSPS students asked many questions about food problems in their home countries. Director Lim discussed these questions with the students and explored possible solutions together.

[PSPS Distinguished Lecture Series] The Saemaul Undong from the perspective of the French

On July 21, there was a special lecture by the Presidential Memorial Foundation Park Chung-hee, and a professor from the French university. The lecturer was Dr. Sebastien BERTRAND, History Professor for Preparatory Classes for Grandes Ecoles at Cité scolaire Janson de Sailly (PARIS XVIe). The theme of the lecture was "The Saemaul Undong from the perspective of the French." The professor once again explained the history of the Saemaul Undong to enhance students' understanding, and explained how it can be incorporated into the local community based on the Saemaul Undong and the Saemaul spirit from the French perspective. In addition, it explained how schools educate students on the Saemaul Undong and ODA. Through the lecture, students were able to learn how to apply and practice the Saemaul Undong according to the characteristics of each country through various perspectives.

[PSPS Distinguished Lecture Series] Korea’s ODA in Global Aid

On July 14, Choi Jae-young, Director General for AID Policy Coordination, officer for Government Policy Coordination, Prime Minister’s Secretariat, gave a special lecture. The theme of the lecture was "Korea's ODA in Global Aid," and it explained the history and progress of the Korean government's ODA projects and international aid. Through this, students were able to understand deeply about Korea's international aid. The students had a meaningful time asking questions about Korea's aid projects. 2023 Fire- Safety Training

On June 9, PSPS freshmen completed fire-safety training at Gyeongsan Fire Station. In the event of a crisis, the ability to respond to the crisis was improved by learning the theory of how to cope and experiencing it in person. Students were able to learn how to use fire extinguishers, how to escape in the event of a fire in the room, how to use a descending life line, how to escape from the subway, and how to respond and evacuate in the event of an earthquake. They also learned how to respond even if the elevator stops. Finally, through CPR learning, they had a valuable experience that could save the lives of others in an emergency. Students showed high satisfaction with education today and expected to be able to respond appropriately in times of crisis.

2023 Media Creator Education

PSPS conducted media creator education with the Public Relations team. A total of six teams, 18 students, volunteered to participate, and completed the education excellently. The training was divided into three times in total. For three days, June 21st, 24th, 27th, students were able to learn about various fields in Media. Also, each team had a meaningful time making PSPS promotional videos.

[JULY] SAEMAUL SPIRIT MONTHLY CLEANING CAMPAIGN

PSPS students clean the campus on 3rd July. This tradition has continued since the beginning of PSPS. It’s an event through which students can learn Saemaul spirits, as it is carried out early in the morning, and it is a volunteer work for non-PSPS students.

2023, 10th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony of Saemaul Undong & Samsung Electronics

PSPS students attended the “10th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony of Saemaul Undong Documentary Heritage's UNESCO World Documentary Heritage Losing” at the Gumi Sports Complex Center. It was a meaningful time to think about how the Saemaul Undong could be applied to our society today. After the event, students visited the Samsung Electronics Smart City in Gumi and had a meaningful time.
